W5 Turf G1 Summary

A summary of W5 G1 races for a wet week in the magnificent world of turf.

In Barbados on Day 1 the Barbados Derby was run for 3yos over 6 furlongs on a yielding track. The winner was It’s Still Alright (Time Test) a homebred for Laura Smith. It was his second G1 win after taking out the Favorite Trick Stakes as a 2yo.

On Day 5 starting in Hong Kong with the Tulip Sprint on a good track over 6 furlongs. 4yo colt Franz Joseph (Ahtohallan) was a strong winner for Aidan O Brien. It was the third G1 win for the Steward bred who was a $2 million purchase and has already earned back $1.5 million. He is scheduled to retire this year.

In South Africa 4yo filly Uber Mysterious (Nightwatch) won the Gold Reef Mile Stakes for fillies and mares over a mile on a yielding track. It was the first G1 win for the Enpea Racing homebred and her sixth win from 13 starts.

In South Africa 4yo colt Loiosh (Backstreet Boy) won the Great White Plate for 4yos and up on a yielding turf track over a mile. It is the second G1 win for the Rochelle Bos homebred who takes his record 6 wins from 13 starts.

In South Africa You Know Nothing (Nightwatch) won the South African 2000 Guineas for 3yos on a yielding turf track over a mile. Another Rochelle Bos homebred who gets his first G1 win and takes his record to 5 wins from 7 starts.

The final G1 race this week was the South African 1000 Guineas for 3yo fillies over a mile on a yielding track. Bold Witch (Tithanos) got her first G1 win for Tiyoun Long and took her record to 6 wins from 7 starts.


With a relatively quiet week for G1s I took a quick look at G2 winners this week as well.

Bikram (Baaeed) won the Indian 1000 Guineas for 3yo fillies over a mile for Gregwyn T. Secret Contact (Emaraaty Ana) won the male equivalent for Lee Cara.

4yo filly Mawu (Only One) beat the boys in the Pakistan Derby for 4yos over a mile and a half for Nestor Makhno. The Pakistan Oaks was won by Widow Of Love (Amor De Verano) for Karl Smythe. Interesting that both 4yo fillies ran the same speed figure in each race.

In Asia the Osaka Mile was won by Spirit Of Dubawi (Nightwatch) for Richard Breedlove. The 3yo fillies ran over 7 furlongs in the Four Of Stars Stakes which was won by Gatubela (Mama Beat Papa) for Cesar Raez.

In Europe The fillies and mares ran over a mile and a quarter in the Prix La Liberte which was won by Mr Lord Rich with Ace The Final (There There There). The Dubliner Mile was won by Quilaro (Superbia) for Rafa Usoz. Fury (With Drama) won the Warning Label Stakes over 11 furlongs for Laura Ferguson.

In the United Arab Emirates the Moved To Tears Stakes was won by Love Actually (Improvisational) for Laura Ferguson. The 3yos ran over 9 furlongs in Florida in the Palm Meadows Stakes won by Cy Young (Ivor) for Kent Saunders. Tripped And Fell (Megapixels) won the Caesar Augustus Handicap for Nestor Makhno over 10 furlongs in New York.

In the South African Stayers Stakes 5yo mare Walnut Dashboard (Frederico Tesio) beat the boys in the 14 furlong contest by a neck for Eric Nalbone. Finally the Australian Sires Stakes for 2yos over 6 furlongs was won by Zero Dawn (Wait For Daylight) for Laura Smith.
