Notorious Out

Original article written by The Steward posted 17 years 2 weeks ago

Kentucky Derby contender Notorious is likely out of the race. The highly talented son of Loki Dynasty was found to have a quarter crack that will keep him out of training until the Sunday before the Run for the Roses, meaning he will also miss his prep race this week in the Blue Grass Stakes. He could still run after trainer Mallory Guesnon reviews his health and status at that time.

However, Notorious will have a difficult time after only one prep (Lane's End Stakes, week 2) which he did win by 2 lengths over Derby Report.

The blow was devastating to trainer Guesnon, who has run in the Derby twice before, both times with horses who had distance limitations (Anthem and Thejoyinforgetting). Notorious is bred to excel at 1 1/4 - 1 1/2 miles, and it is likely that he will attempt to make a run for the Belmont Stakes.

Last year, Derby favorite California missed the race due to injury after a run in the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland. The year before that, Azelia Bay missed the Kentucky Oaks after also suffering an injury at Keeneland.
