Awake as I Am One Step Closer

Original article written by Callie Anderson posted 15 years 1 week ago

Awake as I Am has taken one step closer to becoming the SIM's next Triple Crown winner.

In the Baltimore Crown he ran brilliantly. In the 1 3/16 miles race, he ran it in 1:53.45 earning a speed figure of a whopping 91. He won by 1 ¾ lengths.

Awake as I Am is the Louisville Derby winner and has been dominating his competition. He is 8 for 8 now and shows no sign of slowing down. He won the Derby by 1 ¼ lengths and earned a speed figure of 88. He finished the 1 ¼ miles in 1:59.13. Serving as his preps for the Derby he won the Southern California Derby by 2 lengths and the Loki Masterpiece Stakes. As a 2 year old he won his maiden, the Graduation Year Stakes, the Long Island Futurity, and the Stewards’ Cup Juvenile.
To date he has won all of his races by a combined margin of almost 32 lengths.
Can he continue this spectacular streak?
Some may be dreading the Long Island Classic because we now know it will be the last time we see him run. It is a very disappointing thing. But he has the pedigree and race record to become the next great stallion, maybe like his own sire Loki Dynasty. His stud fee will start at $50,000.

In second was Rose Hepburn’s Much Like Falling. Much Like Falling ran second in the Southern California Derby where he finished 2nd to Awake as I Am. He was 2 lengths behind him. Before that he ran 2nd in the New Year Stakes behind Anvil by a neck. Much Like Falling definitely ran a big race.

As Awake as I Am ships up to Long Island Park, this is the home track of Eric Nalbone and he is not backing down from Awake as I Am (again) for he is bringing Anvil and New Yorker. Anvil has been a hard fighter in the Triple Crown. He ran third in the Louisville Derby and ran fourth in the Baltimore Crown. He of course was a hot topic for the Derby with his wins in the New Year stakes and the Hot Springs Derby. New Yorker is Nalbone’s other contender. New Yorker’s last start was in the Derby where he ran a sad 14th. He was a winner on the Triple Crown trail where he won the Tremendous Stakes. He finished second in the Kentucky Blue stakes.

It has been 10 years since the last Triple Crown winner. There have only been 3 Triple Crown winners in the 23 years of the sim. The first winner was Priceless Forever. When Priceless Forever won the Triple Crown each race were one week apart.
The second winner was Tremendous. When he won the races were also in a 3 week span. When Jon Xett’s Tremendous won the Derby and then called Preakness his horse Symbol got second in those two races.
And the last horse the capture the Triple Crown was Jet Ski. Jet Ski won the Derby by 1 ½ lengths, he won the Baltimore Crown by a nose, and the Long Island Classic by a head.
He is the only Triple Crown winner standing at stud.

Can Awake as I Am be the fourth winner of the Triple Crown?
