An Interview With Keeper Of Keys

Original article written by Melissa Mae posted 14 years 4 weeks ago

I swung by the Mac Silver barn where Keeper of Keys was hanging out to get his opinions on his chances in the race and what he plans to achieve. As one of the older horses in the field he seemed to have a little bit more wisdom, but he was also a little cocky in his feelings.

M: You seem to thrive in races over two miles. However, you have won at shorter races as well. The Steward’s Cup Turf is 1 ½ miles, a distance you have never won a Grade One at. Are you afraid it may not be your ideal distance?
KOK: I love longer distances and don’t really like 1 ½ miles so I am a little worried. However, I am extremely in shape right now and feel as if I could outlast the whole field because of my long racing

M: You are a dead closer in most of your races. Will this change in the Steward’s Cup?
KOK: I haven’t had a chance to look at the field’s running styles very closely yet. However, I have heard there aren’t many closers so that sets up great for me. I know that Sahara Dune will probably be back chilling with me while the others burn themselves out so I am thinking my style will not change.

M: You are out of the famed mare Nashoba’s Key. Do you feel any pressure from your bloodlines?
KOK: Since she did not run in the SIM, I feel no pressure. The press does wonder how she would have done if she would have raced here but it’s not something that I have to worry about which I’m thankful for.

M: Who are you most worried about in this race?
KOK: There are a few I am worried about. Magician is a monster and is messing with us all in the morning workouts. Sahara Dune is scary and is way too calm for my liking, I want to see a little spunk or waste of energy. Untamed just won the Arc but seems a little tired from his ship, but you can never count him out. History This Day is best at long distances like me so I’m not sure how he’ll like the shorter run, however he may love it. The whole field is scary in their own right so I don’t think I can worry about just one horse.

M: Do you feel that you are getting better with age?
KOK: I think I got a lot better when I turned five. I finally realized just how to race and finally found my stride. I am smaller so I didn’t have as much leg to get in my way as some of the others, but I also had a baby mind until this year. Now that I finally realize what I am doing, I feel super strong and ready to run.

Thank you for your time Keeper Of Keys and I wish you and your connections luck.

Until Next Time,
Mel
