Boldness Doen't Do Timid, Taking the Juvenile Turf

Original article written by Marzy Dotes posted 14 years 4 weeks ago

Boldness capped off a remarkable season by capturing the $750,000 Grade I Steward’s Cup Juvenile Turf by a ¼ length over Lanarkshire. The chestnut colt bred and owned by Alysse Jacobs raced the mile distance on the grass oval at New Orleans Park in 1:35.73.

By capturing this hallmark race, Boldness completed his juvenile season with four wins in as many starts. The son of legendary Acapulco out of stakes winning Not Afraid burst onto the racing scene earlier this season by breaking his maiden in his first race at Futurity Park. After winning his second start, Boldness made his stakes debut in the Generous Stakes at Inglewood Park and captured that win even after falling on his knees at the start of the race. Perhaps overcoming some adversity set him up even better for the Steward’s Cup Juvenile Turf where he faced a formidable field of seven other horses including Lanarkshire who is an accomplished half brother to former North American Champion Two Year Old Filly Helen Keller.

Still, Boldness with regular jockey Heather Sinclair sitting aboard trotted to the post and entered the starting gate with a lot of confidence. When the doors opened, he broke confidently holding onto the third place position in the earliest stage of the race while God Save Ireland bolted for the lead with Lanarkshire in pursuit. By the time the horses had reached the backstretch, Boldness had crept up into the second place spot followed by Lanarkshire and both horses began breathing down the pace setter’s withers. God Save Ireland still held nearly a two length advantage as the field turned for home but Boldness grabbed the lead away from him and began his run down the lane, with Lanarkshire in hot pursuit and the crowds stood up and cheered them on as Boldness finished the race in front by a mere ¼ length over a furiously charging Lanarkshire, who finished a length ahead of World of Hurt.

After the winner’s circle ceremony, Boldness shipped to the airport to jet off to the Euro Hub Stable in England, one of the hearts of the sport of thoroughbred racing. Does this mean that the very promising juvenile colt will come back as a sophomore to tear across the lawns of Europe? Stay tuned until next season’s racing starts to find out.

Hanging out with him for some rest and recreation after their own challenging seasons will be Lanarkshire and World of Hurt who finished not too far behind the winner of the race that closed out their two year old seasons. Perhaps these two contenders hope to parlay their high ranking finishes in the Cup to successful racing seasons as well.
